How to buy Zcash in Germany

What works in Germany: exchanges that sell ZEC there, local ways to pay, any rules to know about, and the routes that work anywhere.

EU exchanges must stop handling ZEC from 10 July 2027

From 10 July 2027, Article 79 of the EU's anti-money-laundering regulation (2024/1624) bars crypto exchanges and other crypto service providers in the EU from keeping accounts that allow anonymous transactions, including through anonymity-enhancing coins such as ZEC. Expect EU exchanges to delist ZEC or restrict it before then. The rule applies to companies, not to you: owning ZEC, keeping it in your own wallet and sending it to other people are not banned.

What to do before 10 July 2027

  • Withdraw any ZEC held on an EU exchange to a wallet you control and shield it, before 10 July 2027 or sooner if your exchange announces a delisting.
  • Allow time for checks: EU exchanges can ask you to prove you own the wallet you withdraw to.
  • Keep records of what you paid, for tax.
  • After that date, wallet swaps and peer-to-peer routes like the ones below remain options.
